Jacinta Nampijinpa Price: New Liberal senator announces deputy leadership run

In a move that will likely further enrage some politicians within the Coalition, Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, has announced she will run for the deputy leadership of the Liberal party only days after defecting from the Nationals.

Senator Price is getting behind Peter Dutton’s former shadow treasurer, Angus Taylor, as he throws his hat in the ring to take on Sussan Ley for the Liberal leadership at a party room meeting in Canberra on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Sunday Ms Price confirmed she will support Mr Taylor in their bid to wrestle control of the party in the aftermath of an historic defeat in the Federal election.

“Today I announce my candidacy for Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and my endorsement for Angus Taylor’s candidacy for Leader,” Ms Price told

“With respect to my decision to change party rooms, these are not matters which I take lightly and this decision today brings with it a great deal of responsibility.

“There is no question that returning to our roots as a party is critical right now. If we want to inspire and empower Australians across our country, we must return to these roots.

“I think of my grandparents who were by no means the elite, building their first home by hand with hessian bags and washing their clothes in the creek in Warners Bay, NSW,” Ms Price added.

“But they saw a spark, a vision of a brighter future for generations to come.”

Outspoken Senator Matt Canavan has been highly critical of Ms Price’s defection and the announcement will add further fuel to a simmering fire within Coalition ranks.

Canavan also announced this week that he will challenge fellow Queenslander and incumbent Nationals leader David Littleproud in the party room meeting.

The senator, who was a minister in the Turnbull and Morrison governments, said he wanted to “bring back our fighting spirit” and lead the party away from a “hiding our light under a bushel approach (which) failed catastrophically”.

His announcement came after Ms Price’s defection to the Liberal Party, which prompted outrage from the Senator and other Nationals colleagues.

In announcing his bid, Senator Canavan said Mr Littleproud should be “enormously proud of his role in defeating the Voice, putting nuclear power on the agenda, and having divestiture powers adopted as Coalition policy for the first time”.

“But this debate is not about protecting his job or mine. This is about fighting for the jobs and livelihoods of the many people we represent. Many of the people that vote for the Nationals party have to shower after work, not before it,” he said in a statement.
