The Dark Ages’ Changing Iconic Difficulty Level System

When Doom: The Dark Ages launches on May 15, it will give us new weapons, demons, and a whole new story with the Doom Slayer. But one thing that won’t be joining us this time is the ‘I’m too young to die!’ difficulty setting. And as you’d expect, fans aren’t too happy that it’s been changed to a new name.

The easiest setting in the game has been renamed to ‘Aspiring Slayer,’ and fans are just confused by it. Why was it changed when there’s no real change in difficulty, and it’s not like the shift achieves something thematically? In fact, it makes less sense. Luckily, you’ll never see it again after you choose.

Doom: The Dark Ages has changed a fan-favorite difficulty setting, and no one’s happy

The easiest setting in Doom: The Dark Ages is the Aspiring Slayer difficulty, and it kinda lacks the charm of what previous Doom games had. Redditor u/Superb_Dentist_8323 said in their post, “I’m sorry but changing ‘I’m too young to die!’ is really lame.” A lot of fellow Redditors also commented and echoed the feeling. Though not all community feedback has been negative.

Another user, u/Randomman16, pointed out that even Hey, Not Too Rough, which used to be considered the franchise’s default “easy” setting, has been removed entirely from the newer games. “Im also kinda confused about the modern games removing “Hey, Not Too Rough” entirely, when HNTR was supposed to be Easy and ITYTD was Very Easy,” they said.

Another commenter criticized the fact that this is also a bit inconsistent with the theme. “It doesn’t even match with the rest of the difficulty names. What a stupid change,” said u/wiggedbaldy. The feedback is definitely mostly negative for most players who think the change is an offense to what made Doom… well, Doom.

This doesn’t affect the fact that the game is good

That said, there’s more to Doom: The Dark Ages than a controversial menu change. The game is a big step for the franchise regarding features and story, and is a prequel to 2016’s Doom reboot. But if we’re still discussing difficulty, it’s more than just options on a menu. The game has a menu of detailed sliders that adjust nearly every combat mechanic so that we can adjust every detail.

After seeing the reviews for DOOM: The Dark Ages, id Software has just achieved legendary status once again.
I’m so ******** hyped next week 🙌

And beyond the difficulty system, there’s a lot for fans to be excited about. Since it’s a prequel to the 2016 reboot, the game takes place in a more medieval world, which means we can expect a story showing us how the Doom Slayer becomes the powerhouse we know today. There are also going to be new weapons, mounts, and much more.

The new Aspiring Slayer difficulty will never replace I’m Too Young to Die for many fans, but thankfully, it’s a small detail that won’t actually affect the gameplay. So ultimately, it shouldn’t affect how good or bad the game ends up being.

Doom: The Dark Ages is set to release on May 15, 2025, for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game will also be a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. Will you be getting it at launch? Let us know in the comments!
