The Dark Ages a Prequel or Sequel? The Slayer Timeline, Explained

The Doom franchise is legendary for its crazy gameplay that lets us experience some of the most violent alien slaying in the gaming industry. But aside from just that, the lore of the franchise has also been pretty badass, and Doom: The Dark Ages is going to expand on a lot when it comes out on May 15.

Ahead of the game’s release, one of the biggest questions seems to be where this new chapter fits into the Doom timeline. Is it a continuation of Doom Eternal, or a prequel? According to id Software and several previews, The Dark Ages is a full-blown prequel where we’ll see exactly how the Slayer becomes the character we saw in Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal.

Is Doom: The Dark Ages a Prequel or Sequel?

Despite some initial confusion, Doom: The Dark Ages is officially a prequel to both Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. This new title in the franchise explores the earlier years of the Doom Slayer, specifically his time among the Night Sentinels on Argent D’Nur. Chronologically, it takes place before Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal.

So in terms of story, we’re going to see the early life of the Doom Slayer. This is when the Slayer goes from being a mere mortal warrior to the nearly god level character that we’ve come to know him as. This backstory has been teased in other games, and we finally get to see it now.

Where Does The Dark Ages Fit in the Doom Timeline?

Chronologically, the order of events in the modern Doom timeline is: DOOM 64, The Dark Ages, DOOM (2016), and then DOOM Eternal. In Doom 64, the Slayer chooses to remain in Hell to stop future invasions, a noble sacrifice that directly leads into the events that we will experience in The Dark Ages.

After seeing the reviews for DOOM: The Dark Ages, id Software has just achieved legendary status once again.
I’m so ******** hyped next week 🙌

This new prequel will bridge the events from that to the classic and modern eras of Doom. Following The Dark Ages, the story moves into Doom (2016) where the Slayer wakes up on Mars after being sealed in a sarcophagus. For now, the end of the timeline as we know it is in Doom Eternal, where we see the full scope of the Slayer’s war against Hell.

How Does The Dark Ages Expand the Slayer’s Origin Story?

Unlike the futuristic or industrial settings of previous entries, Doom: The Dark Ages takes a medieval fantasy approach. In this new chapter of the Doom Slayer’s story, we will see how the Slayer becomes a legend through brutal campaigns against the legions of Hell. We’re also going to get *******-appropriate weapons like the Shield Saw and the legendary Skull Crusher.

The combat in The Dark Ages will also be heavier and grounded compared to the mobility and freedom that we had in Doom Eternal. We’re also going to get new weapons, enemies, mounts, and for the first time in the series, we’ll be able to pilot an Atlan mech to square off against towering Titan-class demons.

Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on 15 May 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
