In his time at FromSoftware, he has made some of the most challenging and widely successful games in the industry. We have an entire sub-genre of games dedicated to the games that he has made. But did you know the creator of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring is just a shy guy? As we’ve learned from multiple interviews over the years, Miyazaki wants his games to take the spotlight, not him. The interviews have painted a picture of someone uncomfortable with fame, reluctant to showcase his work to even his own family, and far more concerned about his games than the attention they bring him. Hidetaka Miyazaki has always wanted his games to be the center of attention Hidetaka Miyazaki joined FromSoftware during the PlayStation 2 era and made an early impact with his work on Armored Core: Last Raven. According to a Game Informer This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up with a fellow FromSoftware developer, it was clear even then that he possessed an uncanny drive and creative spark. Well, that’s not hard to believe now, is it? We’ve seen so many hits from him since. Miyazaki-san joined FromSoftware when the industry was dominated by the PlayStation 2… It was pretty obvious that he had a strong motivation for working on the game… It became clear early on that he stood out from the rest of the developers at FromSoftware. The developer also went on to say that while Miyazaki can appear outgoing in professional settings, he is actually quite shy. He often finds it difficult to handle fan interactions at events like E3 and prefers not to be the center of attention. Although he pretends to be an outgoing person, he’s actually pretty shy. I’ve even heard that members of the media and fans have asked him for little conversations when seeing him at game conventions like E3. But he’s told me he has difficulty fulfilling those requests properly. This sense of humility is also deeply rooted in his personal life. In March 2024, Miyazaki admitted that he doesn’t even allow his family to play his games. You’d think it’s because of their difficulty, but no. “I don’t want to let my family play my games, because I feel like they’d see a bad part of me… I don’t know. I’d feel embarrassed,” he said. It makes sense, obviously. The games that Miyazaki has made all have some of the darkest worlds and themes that we’ve seen in games. So it’s only natural that he’d feel hesitant to share it with his family. Especially if you consider the kind of mindstate you’d have to be in to draw those kinds of ideas. The future of FromSoft should be bright thanks to him This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up Even with the monumental success of Elden Ring and his other games, Miyazaki hasn’t let all the popularity and acclaim get to his head or affect him or the studio. “No decision is based on any assumption that, hey, we did it once, it’s going to happen again,” he explained to The Guardian back in 2024. To him, this fuels better creativity and decision-making. Today, even as the president of FromSoftware, Miyazaki remains deeply involved in game development. Since the launch and success of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the studio has started experimenting with new, smaller-scale projects so other developers and directors within FromSoft can gain experience. Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods are the two upcoming projects from FromSoft that we know of. Miyazaki is personally directing The Duskbloods, which will be a Nintendo Switch 2 title. Whatever direction the studio takes now, Miyazaki can be sure that fans are ready for whatever comes out.
