Rainbow Six Siege X Making the Same Mistake That Sank Counter-Strike 2

Exactly one month from now, R6S will be called Rainbow Six Siege X and will go free-to-play on June 10, 2025. While that seems like a good move in some ways, it might end up like Counter-Strike 2 did. Being an avid player of the game, that fear has been growing for a while.

Additionally, the market already has too many free live-service shooter games. Which also raises the question, “Can Ubisoft keep up with the likes of Marvel Rivals, Valorant, and others?” Either going free-to-play is the best decision ever, or the worst. In simple words, Rainbow Six Siege X is a gamble from Ubisoft.

Rainbow Six Siege X must get everyone’s attention to be a success

It’s a massive achievement that Ubisoft’s shooter managed to be there in the market for more than 10 years. While there are top-dogs like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and more, it was doubtful if it would stay relevant. Surprisingly, it did.

Despite a lot of setbacks from 2023 to 2024, it came back stronger. Thanks to the community that adores the game for being different than regular shooters. To share this experience with more gamers, the shooter is going free-to-play to allow more people to enjoy. Additionally, it rebranded itself as Rainbow Six Siege X to mark the tenth anniversary.

All of this sounds great on paper. Going free to allow more players to enjoy? Great! But here’s the problem. Making it free means hackers will be able to create multiple accounts. If griefers swarm into the game, it would likely create a lot of problems within the community.

The major problem Counter-Strike faced was after going free-to-play. The hackers came in bulk to destroy everyone’s experience. Valve has tried many times to improve VAC anti-cheat, but it couldn’t stop it. Even after the release of Counter-Strike 2, the cheater problem didn’t go away.

Ubisoft seems to be confident about R6 ShieldGuard anti-cheat, which has been developed in collaboration with BattleEye. It is true, Rainbow Six Siege is eliminating cheaters more nowadays. But once the game goes free, cheaters will likely drop into the game harder than before. So, are R6S developers ready for it?

Moreover, after the release of Counter-Strike 2, many maps and game modes were removed on release. Due to a game engine change, Valve developers had to port everything, one at a time. Quite naturally took quite a lot of time, and players lost interest. Ultimately, this caused the game to lose many players.

Rainbow Six Siege X might face that same problem, as maps are being remade from the ground up to implement new additions like fire extinguishers and fire pipes. Not only that, upgrades to various other things like visuals, audio, and game mechanics changes are included.

Will Rainbow Six Siege X be able to mark a sure-shot success for Ubisoft?

After playing Rainbow Six Siege X Beta, it looks and feels impressive. There are some bugs here and there, but the experience was smooth. The movement and gunplay felt better as well. Not forgetting to mention, the audio upgrade takes the win, and many players will appreciate it. So yeah, it doesn’t look that bad for R6SX.

Though it very much depends on Rainbow Six Siege X‘s state upon release. Ubisoft has a history of messing up the game with bugs and later fixing them. On the contrary, there have been updates that made the game better than ever. So it’s a bit unpredictable.

But again, this time around, it seems more promising. It is said the developers have been working on the refresh for three years. Which explains why events and additions have felt lacklustre.
