Xbox Prime, PS6, Switch 2 May Have One More Console Rival by 2026

We are currently deep into the lifespan of current-gen consoles with the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X/S already out for many years now. Sony and

are already cooking up the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and the Xbox Prime for the next generation. And with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release, the next-gen is coming very soon.

While that’s all well and good, is Valve planning to gatecrash the next generation of console releases? The company has already done it before in the handheld market with the Steam Deck going against the Nintendo Switch. With the success of the Steam Deck and improved SteamOS infrastructure, it might be time for Valve to enter the console market with the Steam Box

Valve’s Steam Box could be a competitor to the next-gen Xbox Prime and PS6

In February 2025, there was a

suggesting that Valve was working closely with AMD to develop drivers for the new RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards. This made us all wonder if Valve was building a powerful home console under the SteamOS umbrella.

It’ll most likely be a consolized Steam Deck with significantly more powerful specs, essentially a Steam Deck 2 but without it being a handheld.

Maybe it’ll come out at the same time as the Deck 2. A console variant and a handheld variant from Valve would be pretty awesome.

It wouldn’t have been a bad idea, considering the successful rollout of the Steam Deck, which corrected many of the mistakes of their earlier Steam Machine project. But tierre-Loup Griffais, a key architect at Valve and part of the team behind the Steam Deck., extinguished these rumors as soon as they started

However, Griffais’

didn’t categorically deny the existence of new hardware. As we understand it, it only meant that the leaks may have looked too much into Valve’s driver work. To us, the idea of a modern Steam Box is more exciting than a Steam Deck 2. The handheld has undoubtedly carved out a niche for itself. But it’s limited by battery life, thermals, and portable form factor.

They already tried this. Does anyone remember the Steam Machines or the Steam Controller? I do think their OS is significantly better now, but I doubt this will be a success.

The timing also makes sense. Linux gaming has come a long way, and SteamOS has become a stable fan favorite platform among many gamers. So what this means is that Valve now has the software backbone it lacked during the Steam Machine era. Put that together with the experience gained with the Steam Deck, and there’s a chance for Valve to do it again.

Valve could disrupt the console market the way it did the handheld market

Unlike the Steam Deck, a potential Steam Box wouldn’t be limited by battery life, thermals, or compact design. It could host more powerful CPUs and GPUs, and you know what that means. Imagine the ease of use that SteamOS provides, but on higher resolutions and with better performance on modern AAA games. Sounds good to us.

If Valve were to actually do this, it could be an evolution of the original idea with the Steam Machine. It would essentially be a small form factor PC that is essentially a console due to it having SteamOS and the portability that comes with being a console. If Valve wanted to get even more creative, we could get swappable GPUs and expandable storage, and memory.

Ultimately, we don’t know what Valve is cooking up. The company is known for its secrecy, and these rumors can only fuel our speculation. We know that the PlayStation 6 (PS6), Xbox Prime, and Nintendo Switch 2 could face some competition if the Steam Box ever comes out.
