The Old Country’s “Focused, linear experience” Is Clear Mutiny Against Every Game Studio’s Open World Obsession

We just got a gameplay trailer and release date reveal for ******: The Old Country, and there are some pleasant surprises. Set in 1900s Sicily, the game will be a long-awaited return to the franchise, and in a surprising twist, it will not be open world at all. Hangar 13’s latest entry in the long-running franchise strips things back to basics.

With a promise of a tightly crafted, linear story, we can expect more than just the same old formula that most developers these days use. The best part about all this is the fact that the game will cost $50. Not only is that good in terms of being consumer-friendly, but 2025’s biggest hits so far have been $50 games. So this is surely a good sign.

******: The Old Country isn’t an open-world game, and that’s why it’ll be good

******: The Old Country a “focused, linear experience.” The game follows Enzo Favara, a young Sicilian who takes the oath and climbs the ranks of Don Torrisi’s criminal empire. Set in early 1900s Sicily, we can expect a deeply cinematic story that has all the elements of a good ****** adventure.

The fact that it’s a linear game and not open-world is a pleasant surprise, though. In an industry where more new AAA games are trying to be the next big 100-hour experience, that’s practically heresy. From Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows to even Grand Theft Auto 6, the genre has a chokehold on the industry, but how many games is too many?

Publisher 2K’s president, David Ismailer, said it best: “We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments.” The game’s $49.99 price for the standard edition is also a refreshing take that has recently been popularized.

When big AAA studios are asking us up to $80 for their games, the biggest hits of 2025 have been priced at this lower point. The game will join the likes of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Split Fiction, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 in the lineup of $50 hits this year.

Not every game needs to follow the big trends

This doesn’t mean The Old Country lacks depth. On the contrary, Hangar 13 is using Unreal Engine 5 to bring Sicily to life with meticulous detail. The newly released gameplay footage reveals brutal hand-to-hand combat, authentic weaponry, era-appropriate vehicles, and even horseback traversal.

That’s not to say a linear story is guaranteed to succeed. Like any design choice, it comes with trade-offs. But what ******: The Old Country does so well is make its intentions clear from the start. We aren’t given an illusion of what we’re getting, just a promise of quality over quantity. This is a rare honesty for us in a world where devs fill their big worlds and ignore everything else.

Some of the most beloved games in history, like The Last of Us, Bioshock, and Uncharted, were unapologetically linear. They succeeded not in spite of being linear, but because of it. Do you think ******: The Old Country can join the growing list of hit games in 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
