Margaret River Senior High School surfing stars head into *********** battle as Pro fires up

Some of the region’s leading surf talent will ironically head east just as the Margaret River Pro sets to kick off at their home break.

Margaret River Senior High School will field two teams at the upcoming 2025 *********** Interschools Surfing Championships.

Starting next week on May 14, the contest will see the country’s leading surf schools take each other on in a new format popularised by the *********** Boardriders Battle.

The tag teams are competing as a result of State-level competitions, with MRSHS WA’s best.

MRSHS surf academy teacher Mark Meyer said his young chargers were gearing up for the contest with glee.

“MRSHS is really excited about the opportunity,” he said.

“We will be staying at the Hyundai High Performance Centre at Casuarina Beach and using their facilities throughout the week.

“This is a great opportunity for our young surfers to develop and hone their skills with the best surfers across the country,” Meyer said.

“The event format as a tag event makes for a great viewership and a bit of strategy can go a long way.”

The under-16 boys squad features Ethan Anderson, Jack Bowdell, Zenn Hammond and Taylor Flynn, while the girls’ team has Grace Cook, Sienna Bowdell and Stella Annesely.

The Pro threw a spanner in the works because it meant some of the juniors wouldn’t be available.

“The Pro trial overlaps with the event so we won’t be taking the senior teams unfortunately,” the teacher told the Times.

“The Gold Coast Pro finishes over east the day before we arrive.”

The two school teams had undertaken training including mock heats and support from veteran boardrider Ben Spence.

The interschools competition’s chief of sport Luke Maddad said organisers were thrilled to see the school level grow in competitive surfing.

“We are over the moon to be able to provide this platform for schools from around Australia to compete,” he said.

“It’s grassroots surfing at its best and a great way for kids to get a team experience through surfing.”

More than 100 teams will compete across four divisions from Wednesday to Friday, May 14 to 16.
