Perth weather: Uncharacteristically warm temperatures recorded for metro area, hot conditions to continue

If you’ve felt hotter than usual for this time of year, you’re not alone.

Perth’s weather has been uncharacteristically warm for May, with higher temperatures and less rainfall than expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Jess Lingard said due to a high-pressure system sitting in the Bight and winds moving in an anti-clockwise direction around the system, warm north-easterly winds are being driven into WA’s south.

“It’s similar to what happened last week, however, there was a cold front that came through on the weekend and that brought a lot of rainfall,” Ms Lingard said.

Ms Lingard said the hotter-than-usual conditions will persist through the weekend because the cold front forecast for Saturday is too weak to cause a major decrease in temperatures.

“We do have a cold front coming through this weekend but it’s not very cold at all, so we’re only likely to see between one and three millimetres of rain along the south coast between Yallingup and Albany.”

“It isn’t going to bring us those refreshing cooler temperatures that we might expect for this time of year, so temperatures are going to remain above average through the weekend and into early parts of next week,” she said.

The BoM also issued a reminder to West Australians to remain vigilant when it comes to bushfire threats as the danger seasons are starting earlier and lasting longer.
