“We thought we could do better than” Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Other Games Like Dark Souls

We bet that when Hidetaka Miyazaki was working on ******’s Souls, even he didn’t know what was about to happen. The brilliant man was busy crafting something out of passion that would go on to change gaming forever, pioneering the Souls genre.

Once the formula proved to be successful, FromSoftware then used it again to their advantage, delivering to fans other masterpieces such as the Dark Souls trilogy, Sekiro, Elden Ring, and more. But what happens when you mix in a bit of Sony magic with the Souls formula? Well, you get Bloodborne, the one game the publishing studio believed was made to be better than other Miyazaki creations.

Bloodborne, the cursed yet successful child of Hidetaka Miyazaki and Sony

It is no secret that, despite being locked behind a particular platform, Bloodborne is still one of the best Souls games to have ever graced the gaming world. It surprised even Sony, the publishing studio, that Hidetaka Miyazaki worked with in order to manifest his project into reality.

In an interview with

, Feral Gara, the then-boss of Sony Computer Entertainment’s branch in the ***, revealed how Bloodborne exceeded everyone’s expectations when it came to sales numbers:

It did surprise us, we had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.

Gara revealed how the studio took other Souls games as a reference to determine Bloodborne’s success and that Sony believed it could do ‘better.’ Well, it did, as the PlayStation exclusive went on to become the biggest hit on PlayStation at the time and still remains as one of the best first-party games on the platform even a decade later, despite still being locked at 30 FPS.

Why Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Bloodborne became ******* than it was supposed to be

While many might blame Sony for keeping the iconic game behind the bars of exclusivity, at the time, it was a mutual deal between FromSoftware and the studio to bring Bloodborne to PlayStation, a major reason being that only the PS4 at the time was able to support the graphical fidelity demands of the game that came with stunning visuals of Yharnam.

Ultimately, thanks to Sony’s support, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Bloodborne did become a ******* franchise than any other Souls title that came before. It happened partially thanks to PlayStation’s popularity and strong marketing done by the publishing studio.

Bloodborne getting locked forever on the platform was an unfortunate outcome of the deal between the renowned director and Sony. Luckily for fans, this time around with the upcoming exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2, The Duskbloods, FromSoftware has made sure to keep the trademark with itself, leaving the multi-platform door open for future use, if Hidetaka Miyazaki ever wishes to walk through it.
