These additions, along with other new content like fresh armor sets, weapons, and skills, are set to launch with the Switch 2 version. On the cuter side of grim, Torrent is also getting three new appearance options, because nothing says “brutal open-world despair” like custom horse skins.

In itself, this wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary: new content in a game is to be expected. However, the real kicker is that these same additions will also be sold separately as part of the Tarnished Pack DLC for other platforms.

To me, this feels like a calculated move, one that doesn’t quite align with the vision I once thought Miyazaki had. He was supposed to be the creator who refused to follow the industry’s rules, who seemed more focused on creating complex worlds than on chasing trends.

Let’s not dance around the Erdtree: this is a shrewd, cold-blooded move. Releasing new character classes with the Switch 2 version, while charging loyal players on other platforms for the same content via DLC? That’s not just a cash grab, it’s practically a lore break.

The irony here is cosmic. Miyazaki’s games have always mocked greed and the corruption of power. Dark Souls was literally about kingdoms crumbling under ambition. Bloodborne had Victorian scientists drinking eldritch substances in pursuit of transcendence.

And Elden Ring? The game opens with the gods shattered by their own lust for runes. But now, new classes are being sold separately, not part of the main game. It’s a far cry from the pure creative vision that made Miyazaki a legend.

Sure, the hype around the Switch 2 is real, and I get it. But couldn’t these new classes have been added across all platforms as a free update? Maybe as a thank-you to the 30 million Tarnished who bought the game already?

Instead, we’re getting what amounts to a fancy launch edition, and everyone else has to pay cover just to join the party. But I suppose even visionaries must one day kneel before the Golden Order of Shareholders.
