Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment Release Window, Trailer, And Everything We Know

Nintendo has outlined an enticing slate of games coming to its new Switch 2 system over the next few months. But while a new, mainline Zelda adventure may be a ways off, fans will still get to experience a new Zelda story with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.

Set during the Imprisoning War, the apocalyptic battle that took place before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Age of Imprisonment follows Rauru, Zelda, and other champions of Hyrule as they strive to repel Ganon’s dark forces. Although Nintendo has only offered a brief glimpse at the game so far, it’s already clear it will feature the large-scale battles and speedy combat the Warriors series is known for.

Ahead of its release, here’s everything we know so far about Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. For more on the Switch 2 itself, be sure to check out every confirmed and rumored game so far and everything coming to Nintendo Switch Online at launch.

Nintendo shared the first trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment during its April 2025 Nintendo Direct broadcast.

The trailer begins with Princess Zelda recounting the history of the Zonai and the Hylians, whose union led to an age of prosperity and peace until “a terrible evil arose.” The ensuing battle became known as the Imprisoning War, and this conflict serves as the backdrop of the game.

The trailer then shifts focus to several battle scenes, showcasing Zelda and the King of Hyrule, Rauru, each battling against hordes of Bokoblins, Moblins, and other minions of Ganon.

Gameplay Details

Billed as “the story leading into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a large-scale action game that takes place during the Imprisoning War, the ancient war that occurred between Hyrule and Ganon’s forces long before the events of Tears of the Kingdom.

Like other Warriors games, Age of Imprisonment pits players against wave after wave of enemies, with hundreds of adversaries appearing on the battlefield during every mission. Much like Age of Calamity, the enemies and environments are inspired by and directly taken from Tears of the Kingdom.

Also like other Warriors games, Age of Imprisonment features multiple playable characters, each of whom boasts a unique weapon and playstyle. We don’t yet know how extensive the game’s roster will be, but both Rauru and Zelda will be playable. The announcement trailer also offers a glimpse of Rauru’s sister Mineru, a Zonai researcher who wields different Zonai devices in battle.

Who’s Developing Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment?

Like the previous two Hyrule Warriors games, Age of Imprisonment is a joint venture between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo, with development helmed primarily by the latter’s AAA Games Studio. This recently established subsidiary was founded in 2024 and is led by former Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi, who has worked on all of the previous Nintendo/Warriors collaborations.
