Representatives for the Catholic church have issued a direct response to the president’s polarizing photograph which depicts him as the next pope.

If you somehow managed to miss it, Donald Trump—and the official White House account—shared an AI-generated image on social media that imagined him wearing the Pontiff’s religious robes, proving, as you might expect, to be a highly controversial move in between the death of Pope Francis and the declaration of his successor.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” the NYS Catholic Conference account, representing the Catholic Bishops of New York State, tweeted on Saturday, May 3. “We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

The image has generated massive amounts of backlash, with other social media users calling it “sacrilegious and offensive” and in “very poor taste.”

“He’s making a mockery of himself,” someone else suggested.

“I’m not a Catholic. And I find this offensive and depraved. It’s a mockery of the religion. It’s not funny. It also brings a huge negative impact to the country,” another reply suggested.

Little House on the Prairie alum Melissa Gilbert also contributed her voice to the backlash against the president’s latest antics.
