Ubisoft’s Most Horrendous Game Is Headed to Switch 2

With just a month to go until the Nintendo Switch 2 hits shelves on June 6th, the hype has officially reached fever pitch. Pre-orders? Vanishing faster than a shiny Pokémon. Games? Plenty. But one title showing up at the station caught everyone off guard: Star Wars Outlaws from Ubisoft.

Yes, that one. The same game that stumbled through 2024 like a stormtrooper trying to hit a target is now heading to Nintendo’s next-gen handheld on September 4th. It’s a plot twist no one saw coming, and reactions are ranging from skeptical and cautiously optimistic.

Star Wars Outlaws: A galaxy far, far below expectations

By now, the tale of Star Wars Outlaws is infamous. What was supposed to be Ubisoft’s next big title ended up delaying Assassin’s Creed Shadows, shook investor confidence, and contributed to a rough financial year for the publisher.

There’s no denying, the game had promise. Its open-world environments were richly detailed, and the idea of living out a scoundrel’s story in the Star Wars universe was appealing. But once players stepped in, the illusion crumbled (harder than the Death Star blowing up).

The AI was embarrassingly stupid at times, bugs ran rampant, from visual glitches to full-on crashes, and the mission structure felt lazily repetitive, like a checklist from a design-by-numbers template.

And then there’s the fatigue. Not just from Ubisoft’s increasingly tired open-world formula, but from the Star Wars brand itself. With recent films and series leaving fans divided, Outlaws landed with a dull thud rather than a galactic bang.

Yet, here we are. Ubisoft is giving the game a second shot, this time on Nintendo’s most powerful handheld yet. The question now is: why?

Why bring it to Switch 2?

To Ubisoft’s credit, the past several months have seen a slew of patches and improvements. The Switch 2 version might be the game’s best form yet: stable, polished, and more suited to bite-sized sessions. After all, exploring a galaxy far, far away on the go does have its appeal.

What’s puzzling, though, is that Outlaws is the only Ubisoft title currently

for Switch 2. You’d think Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which has rebounded with strong previews and sales, would be the no-brainer pick.

Or even Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is stealthily making its presence known, would have been the obvious choice. At first glance, the decision seems odd, but when you look at the timeline, it starts to add up.

AC Shadows was delayed to March 20th, and the early consensus about the title was bad, if we’re being generous. That would have made Outlaws the “safer” bet for a port, even if it wasn’t the most loved. And since it is launching on September 4th, it’s pretty clear that it was likely the case.

However, fresh leaks and regional ratings hint at upcoming ports for AC Shadows. And now that developers are also teasing AC Mirage and Rainbow Six Siege ports, it’s clear that Outlaws might just be the first of several Ubisoft titles heading to Nintendo’s new handheld.

So yes, it’s strange. And yes, Outlaws may still be remembered as one of Ubisoft’s biggest stumbles. But who knows? Maybe on a handheld, it will feel less like a disaster and more like a second chance.
