to Make the Game Better

Helldivers 2 has become one of the standout multiplayer titles of the decade. Why do you think that is? We can give credit to the game’s addictive gameplay loop, the satirical goofiness of the Helldivers lore, and the Galactic War. But the biggest credit has to go to Arrowhead Game Studios and the willingness of the devs to listen to the community.

Behind the curtain, Arrowhead has taken a very practical approach to community engagement. The devs are constantly looking at player discussions on

and Discord, and it’s one of their biggest strengths. Their attentiveness and method of direct player interaction have become an example for other studios to follow.

Helldivers 2 is the best example of a developer that communicates

After launching in early 2024, Helldivers 2 quickly became one of the most successful games of the year. It sold over 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, becoming the fastest-selling game for PlayStation. We don’t know if Arrowhead Game Studios expected the game to blow up the way it did, but the devs are now managing not just the game, but its huge community too.

The best part is that the studio has fully leaned into this aspect with its approach to community interaction. Production director Alex Bolle recently spoke to

after the game won two BAFTA Game Awards. In the interview, Bolle was asked why the game did as well as it did, and his answer was the community.

I don’t think we figured it out. One thing we keep at heart is just the interaction with the community. All the players, taking the time to really talk to them, understand what they want. We have so many devs that are continuously looking at Discord, at

. We have a lot of things that come from there, and we want to keep that interaction level.

And we know he wasn’t lying. Arrowhead has easily been one of the most communicative studios we’ve seen in recent years. And over the last year, we’ve seen so many of its developers and officials on

This strategy has paid off for the studio, too, because the game has withstood so many different storms. Whether it was the backlash to the PSN account linking requirement on Steam or balance changes like the infamous Railgun nerf, Arrowhead, we’re all still here. And it’s all because of how willing the devs were to communicate.

It should get even better going forward

As Bolle put it, the constant communication and interaction with players helps Arrowhead prepare future updates around what “the player wants” rather than what developers assume they need. From weapon balancing to faction design, we could be influencing a lot of little things that we might never realize.

The future of Helldivers 2 looks just as bright. Arrowhead has promised that the war for Super Earth is only just beginning, with plans to keep the game alive for years. “If we can keep it going for 10 years, we will,” said CEO Shams Jorjani. We can hope to see new Warbonds, potential new factions, and even more collaborations!

We live in an era of gaming where even the biggest and most popular studios and developers have disappointed fans. And in that sense, it’s great to see a studio like Arrowhead get the community interaction aspect right. The devs may not always make the best decisions, but they’re always ready to listen when it matters.
