Rootbound looks to provide a beautifully realized take on the concept. 

Rootbound comes from a ******* studio called Brainlag Games, which was established in 2024 and has former devs from Piranha Bytes among its roster. As the trailer notes, the minds behind this one previously worked on games like Gothic, Risen, and Flex. If the first look is any indication, they have something special in the works in this stylish physics-based outing.

, with a dash of Death’s Door sprinkled in for good measure. The setting is fittingly bleak, as our plantling hero ventures forth to uncover the secrets behind the island of Akara and a civilization long since forgotten. 

As for that backpack, its mighty tongue wagging from its pouch, it does more than just hold your items and equipment. It serves as a silent companion and can toss you the items you need as long as it’s in the mood. With sentience comes risk, though, as enemies can notice the backpack and focus their attacks on it. 

All the while, a blight runs amok throughout the land, spreading its misery through rain that you’ll need to avoid. Torches and campfires provide a brief reprieve, and it all looks like it could swirl together to create a unique mood. Rootbound is currently planned for a 2026 launch on PC via
