Fremantle could set up premiership tilt with win over Geelong after favourable draw

Fremantle’s premiership tilt could be set up in the first five rounds but former defender Lee Spurr says while a good start is important, they must win games they start as favourites regardless of injuries.

After a pre-season of anticipation and expectation, the Dockers the year against Geelong down at GMHBA Stadium — a venue where they’ve had recent success, winning their past two games.

A win over the Cats and the Errol Gulden-less Sydney at Optus Stadium could have the Dockers unbeaten after the first five rounds in the best stat to the season in a decade.

The Dockers then play the first western derby of the year against a West Coast side which will still be looking to find their feet under new coach Andrew McQualter.

They host hosting a the Western Bulldogs who could still be without injuster superstar skipper Marcus Bontempelli before they take on wooden spoon fancies Richmond in Gather Round.

The fixture sets up the Dockers to potentially be undefeated before they travel to the MCG to take on Melbourne in a first quarter of the year that could set up their push for a maiden premiership.

Fremantle have their own injury troubles heading into the season though, with ruckman Sean Darcy and midfielder Hayden Young to miss the opening games with injuries, while dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe is underdone after pre-season knee surgery.

Former Docker Spurr said a strong start to the season would set Fremantle up for a tilt at the top four.

“There are two tough games to start the season, they could go either way. They need to have a good start to the year to build momentum in the team,” he said.

“They also need to start consistently banking the wins in the games they are favourites regardless of any personnel changes due to injury.”

Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick said he had tried to balance expectations with enthusiasm heading into round one.

“I think every Fremantle supporter I have run into and bumped into gives you a knowing look and a nod and a wink that it’s expected to be this year, it’s all going to happen,” Garlick told ABC Radio.

“We understand that the enthusiasm and the excitement — which it’s fair to say I think they’d be at least a dozen if not more sides would probably thinking along similar lines.

“We feel that we’ve been building really well and all of the work that we’ve done over the last five or so years in particular have led us to a potential opportunity to really contend and we’re hopeful and confident that can be starting this year.”
