Kieren Briggs has endured a nightmare start to the young AFL season, with the GWS ruck star taken to hospital after an ugly clash in the opening term against Collingwood.

Briggs was a victim of friendly fire from teammate Sam Taylor as he looked to make an impact in a defensive marking contest midway through the quarter.

Taylor’s hip made contact with the ruckman’s head, leaving Briggs laid out on the turf for several minutes before the stretcher was called for.

After being assessed in the rooms, Briggs was taken to hospital for scans on his neck and took no further part in the contest.

It’s a blow for the Giants, who relied on part-timer Lachie Keeffe in the ruck for the remainder of the clash against the Magpies.

The 25-year-old may well be forced to miss next weekend’s match-up against Melbourne, depending on whether concussion symptoms are determined.

Briggs has featured in all bar one of GWS’ past 42 games since becoming the side’s first-choice ruckman midway through the 2023 campaign.
