Libby Mettam makes first metropolitan election day booth visit in key seat of Jandakot

Liberal leader Libby Mettam says she’s “not nervous” as she began a blitz of seats in Perth hours before polls close.

The leader arrived at Ranford Primary School in the seat of Jandakot after 11am, greeting her candidate, Melville councillor Nicole Robins, who is seeking to overturn Labor’s 18.2 point margin in a battle with upper house MP Stephen Pratt.

Ms Mettam is set to hit 11 electorates — including her own — on Saturday.

She started the morning by casting her vote for the 2025 State election at the Naturaliste Community Centre in Dunsborough.

Despite only holding the seat of Vasse in 2021 by a margin of 4.3 per cent, she is expected to win comfortably.

Her main contestants will be the WA Labor candidate Evan Lewis and Greens candidate Mia Krasenstein.

Ms Mettam had a warm reception and said she was encouraged by the candidates the party had on the ground and that they had listened to the community.

“We have a real plan to address the mess that’s been created over the last eight years,” she said.

“Labor have taken the people of Western Australia for granted and I understand they think this election is in the bag.”

“We won’t take the people of Western Australia for granted and the WA Liberals are listening.”

In Jandakot, she glad-handed with voters who were queuing in what could be the longest line of election day.

One woman, who greeted Ms Mettam while stuck in the hour-long line, said it was good to see her and Ms Robins “on International Women’s Day”, another requested a selfie.

But when she attempted to tell an older man it was “time for a change” he replied: “No”.

His wife chimed in, saying: “He’s too old to change”.

Ms Mettam said she had not yet had a democracy sausage but was “warming up for one”.

“I’m not nervous. I’m confident about the plan that we’ve put forward,” she said.

“If Labor is re-elected, we will see the same Labor values for the next four years.

“So look, I appreciate it’s a David and Goliath battle, but the vote is in the people of Western Australia’s hands.”

Ms Mettam said the volunteer turn out was “great”, but would not say if the vibe indicated a big swing to the Liberals from their 2021 wipeout.

“It’s very hard to tell at this stage,” she said.

Ms Robins said it was “no secret that the Liberals are the underdogs” but that there was a “great feeling out here”.

Labor heads into the election defending 54 out of 59 seats.

Polls indicate Roger Cook will win another landslide, but with a reduced majority.
