Australia’s former world No.1 carded a dazzling second-round eight-under-par 64 to rocket 40 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth at the halfway point of the signature $US20 million ($32m) tournament. In a positive sign ahead of the Masters starting in a month, Day racked up an eagle and seven birdies to charge from four over to four under for the championship. He trails outright leader Shane Lowry by four shots entering the weekend. Lawry had six birdies in his five-under 67 to establish a two-shot lead at Bay Hill. The Irishman stands at eight under after passing 18-hole leader Wyndham Clark, who posted a 71 on Friday to sit alone in second spot. Lowry set the tone for his round by sinking a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-3 second hole. The 37-year-old was third last year and is gunning for his first individual win since the 2022 BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour. He and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy did team up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last year. Collin Morikawa (68) and Canada’s Corey Conners (70) share third at five under, one shot ahead of Day, McIlroy (70) and American Russell Henley (68). American trio Justin Thomas (70), Max Greyserman (71) and Keegan Bradley (72) are tied for eighth at three under, two strokes ahead of world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who settled for an even-par 72 on Friday. Fellow former world No.1 Adam Scott, at three over after a second-round 72, was the only other *********** to make the halfway cut. Cam Davis slumped from two under and in the mix to six over after following his first-round 70 with a shocking 80, while Min Woo Lee (73-78) departed at seven over.
