Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa cause of death revealed: Both died from natural causes, Alzheimer major factor

Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico have announced actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s cause of death after the pair were found dead, alongside their dog, in February.

The former actor, aged 95, and his wife, 65, were discovered dead at their Santa Fe home on February 26, with police initially deeming their deaths “suspicious”.

Now, after an autopsy was completed, authorities have confirmed that both Hackman and Arakawa died of natural causes. However, officials believe Arakawa died first and that Hackman may not have been aware of her death.

“The cause of death for Ms Betsy Hackman, aged 65 years, is hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, the manor of death is natural,” Doctor Heather Jarrell, Chief Medical Examiner for New Mexico said.

“Testing for carbon monoxide was negative,” she added.

Turning focus to Hackman, Dr Jarell said: “The cause of death for Mr Gene Hackman, aged 95 years, is hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributory factor.”

Dr Jarell said she was “not aware of his (Hackman’s) normal daily functioning capability” but revealed he had not eaten for some time prior to his death.

“It’s quite possible that he was not aware that she was deceased,” she said.

What is Hantavirus?

Arakawa’s death has been determined to be a result of hantavirus.

Hantavirus is a virus carried by rodents and can cause illness or death if transmitted to humans.

Symptoms include lung issues and hemorrhagic fever.

The virus can also cause renal syndrome, impacting a body’s kidneys.
