Millions of residents on the eastern seaboard of Australia have spent a sleepless night ahead of Cyclone Alfred’s landfall some time on Friday.

The SES has fielded thousands of distress calls as evacuations continue up and down New South Wales and Queensland coastline.

The forward command post for the SES in Lismore has been coordinating a mass movement of to avoid a repeat of the devastating scenes during the 2022 floods.

SES boss Stuart Fisher and emergency service heads have implemented an early warning system and people are encouraged to take note of critical information.

“We were criticised that we alerted people during the night to evacuate in 2022 and have decided to go early this time to give people more of chance to move,” Mr Fisher said.
