The St. Paul Police Retirement Association (SPPRA) said in its roll call Reilly served the department form 1996-2013, confirming Reilly had died “from injuries she received in the line of duty.”

Reilly suffered her injuries in March 2010, when she responded to a 911 hang-up call at the home of Thomas Swenson on the 1600 block of Birmingham Street. His mother told police he was threatening others and had been drinking after he stopped taking his bipolar disorder medication.

Reilly’s orders to Swenson were ignored and Swenson assaulted the officer, reportedly hitting her in the back of the head several times. She was left with serious injuries, including double vision, migraines and memory loss.

Swenson’s parents claimed during the trial that Reilly’s injuries happened after she tripped over furniture.

However, Swenson was found guilty by a Ramsey County jury of 1st-degree assault and 4th-degree assault on a police officer and obstructing the legal process. He was sentenced to eight-and-a-half-years in prison.
