 (KRQE) – It was a typical trip to a local grocery store for one Albuquerque man until he saw suspicious activity and decided to intervene. Jeremy Gibson said he was walking out of the Smith’s on Carlisle and Constitution when he noticed three young men putting on neck gaiters.

“In a very nonchalant way, I just kept walking, and I said, ‘Hey, why are you guys putting masks on? Are you getting ready to rob the store?’ And it was more of just a comment, but then their eyes got really big, and I knew that they were actually getting ready to rob the store,” said Jeremy Gibson, victim.

Gibson said he warned security of the potential danger, and as he was leaving the parking lot, shots rang out. One bullet hit and went through Gibson’s face. He recalled immediately losing sight in his left eye.

Without a phone, Gibson said he drove to the Hampton Inn on Carlisle, where a couple checking in helped him. Gibson said the last he heard from detectives, they were still looking into video evidence.

But he’s frustrated he hasn’t learned more in the nearly two weeks since the shooting. With at least four more surgeries ahead of him, Gibson is grateful to the friends, family members, and strangers who’ve raised nearly $20,000 to help with medical bills.
