Plowable snow looks likely in Minnesota as ‘abnormally strong’ cyclone arrives midweek

We’re one day closer to a midweek storm and weather officials say “confidence is increasing” that plowable snow is on its way to Minnesota.

In its latest forecast discussion, the National Weather Service says “an abnormally strong surface cyclone will bring rain, accumulating snow, and gusty winds” to Minnesota and Wisconsin starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday.

Rain will arrive first, landing in the Twin Cities for the Tuesday evening commute, but it will transition to snow through the evening as colder air arrives.

“Several hours of accumulating snow will follow heading towards daybreak Wednesday,” the discussion continues. “Snow ends from west to east Wednesday morning, such that locations across eastern Minnesota/western Wisconsin will be under snow for much longer than areas out west.”

As things stand, accumulating snow is expected in the Twin Cities, with “plowable amounts” of 2+ inches “likely.” But the wider system is also expected to produce heavier bands of snow that could exceed 6 inches, it just remains to be seen where that will fall, with the current projections placing it in western Wisconsin.

“The Wednesday morning commute will be hazardous, especially across southeastern Minnesota/western Wisconsin due to the combination of falling snow/strong winds. Brief white out conditions are possible,” the discussion adds.

The NWS says it’s possible that winter storm advisories, watches, or potentially warnings may be required over the coming days.

Here’s a look at what the current models suggest.

Here’s the European model, which is spitting out as much as a FOOT of snow in the Twin Cities, though it is surely an outlier.

Here is the American model, which is far more pessimistic about snow totals in the Twin Cities, but has the southeast of Minnesota getting as much as 9 inches.

And finally the ********* model, which places the heaviest band of snow just to the north of the Twin Cities metro.
