Call of Duty could still come to PS4 and Xbox One this year

Call of Duty may still come to PS4 and Xbox One this year, it’s been claimed.

The Call of Duty franchise has long been known to continue to release on consoles long past the point where the console maker itself has stopped supporting it. In 2015, Call of Duty: ****** Ops 3 was released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, two years after the release of the PS4 and the Xbox One.

However, a new report suggests that Activision could be releasing its 2025 Call of Duty game on last gen’s machines, 5 years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were released.

It’s claimed that last-generation versions of the game are in development and will be released alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series versions coming this winter.

, an outlet known for extensive Call of Duty coverage, with a history of posting information about the franchise before it is officially revealed.

“Supporting last-gen in 2025 is a wild decision, but the game is in development for the old consoles from what we’ve heard.”

The decision to support last generation consoles may be a surprising one to some players, but due to the number of players who are still using a PS4, it is likely that if the last-generation console versions are infact real, they have been motivated by the number of players that haven’t moved on to buy a new system.

Last year, Sony claimed that over 49 million of its users were still using the PS4.

The PS5 is currently only roughly 1 million consoles behind where the PS4 was sales-wise at this point in its lifecycle (75m vs 76.5m), however, on the Xbox side, sales of

‘s consoles have reportedly stuttered, tracking behind Xbox One.

Call of Duty currently contains all of its products in one Call of Duty launcher across all platforms, so whatever 2025’s Call of Duty game is, it would likely be added to this same system. When the time comes that the last generation systems don’t receive that year’s Call of Duty, it’s possible that this would cause issues for the launcher, potentially motivating Activision to continue to support the system.

The hugely popular Warzone mode remains cross-platform and typically ties into that year’s main Call of Duty release, so it’s possible that not releasing that year’s game on a certain platform could effect Warzone compatibility.
