‘Grateful’ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praises *** PM Keir Starmer following ugly White House spat

Britain has greeted Ukraine with open arms following an ugly confrontation with the US, offering a $3.7b defence loan after the two leaders were photographed embracing.

*** Prime Minister Keir Starmer greeted Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky at 10 Downing Street after the war-torn country’s leader jetted to the *** following a sensational bust-up at the White House.

US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance used that original meeting to take Mr Zelensky to task, accusing him of being ungrateful for America’s support and uninterested in cutting a deal that would end the war.

Mr Zelensky left the White House early, cancelling a planned minerals deal that was expected to be signed between the two countries.

He flew straight to Britain, where the reception from the *** Prime Minister was considerably more warm.

Sir Keir welcomed Mr Zelensky with a hug in front of cameras outside No. 10 before the two countries agreed to the $3.7b (€2.26) loan deal.

The money will be used for weapons production in Ukraine, according to a statement Mr Zelensky made on X.

“This loan will enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities and will be repaid using revenues from frozen Russian assets,” he said.

“The funds will be directed toward weapons production in Ukraine. This is true justice — the one who started the war must be the one to pay.

“I thank the people and government of the United Kingdom for their tremendous support from the very beginning of this war. We are happy to have such strategic partners and to share the same vision of what a secure future should look like for all.”

A Downing Street spokesperson told the BBC that Sir Keir had reiterated his support for Ukraine and that “the *** wioll always stand with them, for as long as it takes”.

“The Prime Minister restated his determination to finding a path that ends Russia’s ******** war and ensures a just and lasting peace that secures Ukraine’s future sovereignty and security,” the spokesperson said.

“The leaders looked forward to continuing these discussions at tomorrow’s leaders’ summit in London.”

The meeting follows global outrage over what some analysts are calling an ambush in front of the world’s media at the White House on Friday (local time).

Mr Zelensky arrived in London to shouts of support from people who had gathered outside of 10 Downing Street, where Sir Keir gave him a hug and ushered him inside.

“And as you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom,” Sir Keir told the leader of the war-torn country.

“We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take.”

Mr Zelensky thanked him and the people of the *** for their support and friendship.

The Ukrainian President had been scheduled to meet with the *** Prime Minisyter on Sunday before a summit with other European leaders to discuss Ukraine and shoring up defences across the continent.

But the timetable for their bilateral meeting was apparently sped up in the aftermath of the US visit.

Despite the US talks ending in acrimony, Mr Zelensky struck a conciliatory tone in a series of posts on X after arriving in the ***.

Ukraine was “very grateful to the United States for all the support,” he said.

“I’m thankful to President Trump, Congress for their bipartisan support, and American people.

“It’s crucial for us to have President Trump’s support. He wants to end the war, but no one wants peace more than we do.

“We are the ones living this war in Ukraine.

“It’s a fight for our freedom, for our very survival.”

The summit on Sunday in London will include leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania, as well as the NATO secretary-general and the presidents of the European Commission and European Council.

Mr Zelensky will also meet with King Charles on Sunday before the summit that is being held at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace.
