Man, 37, dead after being Tasered by Halifax police; 2nd similar incident in a week

Nova Scotia’s police watchdog is investigating after the death of a second person who was Tasered by Halifax police in less than a week.

In a statement Saturday, Halifax police say they were called to a residence on Farringdon Way in Bedford, N.S., on Friday night due to a 37-year-old man “displaying erratic behaviour.”

The man became aggressive with police and was Tasered, the Serious Incident Response Team said in a statement Saturday.

SIRT said police handcuffed the man and paramedics were called. SIRT said the man needed medical assistance and police administered first aid and gave him naloxone — a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses — as part of their efforts.

Paramedics and Halifax firefighters also tried to save the man’s life, police say.

The man was taken to hospital and where he was declared dead.

Halifax police directed all inquiries to SIRT.
