Monster Hunter Wilds – Best Items To Craft Early

All journeys begin with a single step, and this concept rings true in Monster Hunter Wilds. When you first start out, you only have weak, low-rank gear. However, you’ll slowly but surely acquire the materials that you need as you progress. Here’s our guide to help you determine the best items to craft in Monster Hunter Wilds, at least for the first few hours of your adventure.

The best early-game items to craft in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds, similar to its predecessors, is all about hunting down beasts, gathering their materials, making better gear, and hunting down even stronger beasts. This process is oft-repeated throughout the campaign and the endgame, which is why it’s also important to determine how you’ll go about progression early on. For this particular guide, we opted to focus on craftable weapons, armor, and consumables that we feel are viable for those who are just starting out.

Weapon option: Bone Tree -> Quematrice Tree and Lala Barina Tree

Before you decide to smash gigantic creatures in the head, we encourage you to take a look at our best weapons guide. We’ve detailed the ideal armaments that you can use depending on your preferred role or playstyle. Also, be sure to try out some moves and combos at the Training Area.

In any case, our recommendation for the best early-game item to craft in Monster Hunter Wilds is none other than the first option from the Bone Tree. This only requires 500x Zenny and 2x Mystery Bone, and there are plenty of these in the Windward Plains.

The Bone-type variant has slightly higher attack compared to the default Hope variant. From there, you can forge upgraded versions. Depending on the weapon category, the Bone Tree might lead to the Quematrice or Lala Barina options, or not at all, but these armaments are still good to have:

  • Quematrice variant (fire element/burning status): Requires 3x Quematrice Scale, 2x Quematrice Igniter, and 1x Quematrice Crest.
  • Lala Barina variant (thunder element/paralysis status): Requires 3x Lala Barina Shell, 2x Lala Barina Mucus, and 1x Lala Barina Claw.

The Quematrice is encountered very early in the game in the Windward Plains biome. The creature’s materials also let you create a fire elemental weapon. You can then wield this a bit later once you’re facing the Lala Barina in the Scarlet Forest biome, as they’re weak against fire.

Armor option: Lala Barina and Piragill

Speaking of the Lala Barina, this spider-flower hybrid rewards materials for a thunder/paralysis weapon. Moreover, some items can be used to craft a few pieces of the Lala Barina set. Also, while you’re exploring the Scarlet Forest, you might encounter a Piragill, which has a single gear piece that you can make.

  • Barina Headgear: Requires 2x Lala Barina Floret and 1x Lala Barina Mucus.
  • Barina Mail: Requires 2x Lala Barina Floret, 2x Lala Barina Shell, and 1x Lala Barina Stinger.
  • Barina Vambraces: Requires 2x Lala Barina Shell and 1x Lala Barina Claw.
  • Barina Coil: Requires 1x Lala Barina Mucus, 1x Lala Barina Claw, and 1x Lala Barina Stinger.
  • Piragill Greaves: Requires 1x Piragill Fin and 1x Malachite Ore.

The reason why we suggest grabbing these items is because of the Uth Duna, a boss found in the Scarlet Forest biome. If you’re playing solo and rely primarily on AI companions/SOS Flare, then this encounter might be tough since only Olivia and your Palico are there to back you up. The two other companions can’t be summoned at all. However, if you have the additional water resistance from the aforementioned gear, then you should be able to survive the Uth Duna’s attacks for longer periods.

Consumables: Mega Potion and Traps

Lastly, let’s talk about the best items to craft among consumables. Ideally, you should have a lot of Potions early on so you can heal up. Oh, and you don’t really need to craft Potions using Herbs–just buy them from the Provisioner NPC at your base.

Next, while exploring, be on the lookout for Honey. You can craft Mega Potion–use 1x Potion and 1x Honey–which heals an even ******* amount.

Since we’re on the subject of crafting consumables, don’t forget about traps as well. You need a Trap Tool and other materials in case you want to ensnare monsters instead of killing them outright. You can learn more in our traps/capture mechanics guide.

That does it for our guide on the best early-game items to craft in Monster Hunter Wilds. Get ready for a grand (and grindy) trek across multiple regions.
