Raven Software has announced a major change for Call of Duty: Warzone, as the studio is experimenting with 150-player lobbies for standard battle royale playlists.

Not every match will be 150 players, though, as Raven said it’s only doing this “intermittently” as a means of testing things. “We will be closely monitoring player feedback, performance, and overall impact on match flow over the coming weeks.” The changes do not apply to Ranked modes.

Warzone originally began with 150-player matches before Activision rolled it back to 100 in 2023. In 2024, Activision pushed the player count up to 120.

Activision originally said 150-player matches were “too chaotic,” and that reducing player counts helped speed up matchmaking times. However, players have consistently called on Activision to increase the player count, and now it’s happening.

Next up for Warzone and ****** Ops 6 is the upcoming Season 3 update. It hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to begin in March with a bunch of new content. Among other things, it’s rumored that the new season will take a page out of Fortnite’s playbook and be an “OG” season that calls back to the game’s origins, including bringing back the original Warzone map, Verdansk.

Boosting player numbers to 150 for Warzone could also be a reflection of this OG status, as the game originally had 150-player matches at launch in 2020.
