Breaksea puts out call for youth writers to contribute to 2026 bicentenary production the Albany Project

Breaksea is looking for talented young storytellers for a groundbreaking stage show that will notch a starring role in Albany’s bicentenary celebrations.

The arts organisation has put out a call for people aged 12 to 18 to join its Youth Writer Group workshops, kicking off the first stages of planning for the Albany 2026 music production, the Albany Project.

In collaboration with the West *********** Opera, the project will explore the theme of “a future where anything is possible” while looking back on noteworthy characters, the stories of colonisation and the Menang Noongar culture that flourished for thousands of years before.

The youth development and consultation for the production, which is one of seven flagship events, will run across 14 sessions in March and April, starting on Saturday.

Attendees will be guided by local industry experts including writers Jon Doust and Rachael Colmer, who will offer advice and provide a “structure to organise the chaos”.

“It’s about what the participants think is a crucial piece of the Albany story,” Doust said.

“We might, at some point mention a particular story and hope that someone might grab it, but if they don’t grab it, we’re not likely to push it.

“We want to see the young ones bring their strengths, and I would say our primary job is recognising those strengths and encouraging them.

“We really want all sorts of people involved in this, and specifically hear the stories young Noongars have to offer, so it’s important to work around so the space isn’t threatening or intimidating.”

Breaksea ambassador Tyler Roberts is a former participant in similar workshops and said it was a great way for young people to develop the courage required to tell important stories.

“It’s important to involve different parts of the community,” he said.

“Get them on board and share their stories as well as older people, younger people, whoever wants to talk.

“This is a big thing for this town, and we need to tell our truths.”

Registration to join the workshops can be completed on the
