Woman uncovers old newspapers amid home renovation including one from 1937

A woman has uncovered a collection of old newspapers hidden under the carpet of her newly-bought home in Richmond, London, including a Daily Mirror edition from 1937. Carina Duarte, 22, discovered the papers while renovating the two-bedroom Edwardian property, which she bought with her partner in January 2024. Among the papers was one from 17 June 1937, which covered the Spanish Civil War, and others from 30 November 1989, highlighting the era’s grocery prices, such as a chicken costing just 89p. Carina plans to frame the 1937 edition to celebrate its historical significance.
