Crows ruck out for season, ex-Swan given AFL lifeline

Former Sydney ruckman Lachan McAndrew has joined Adelaide as another injury rules out Crow Kieran Strachan for the AFL looming season.

McAndrew, who played two AFL games during four seasons on the Swans’ list, has been added to Adelaide’s squad as a pre-season supplemental selection ******* signing.

The 24-year-old was recruited by Sydney in the 2021 mid-season draft and delisted at the end of last year, when he initially signed with Adelaide’s state league team.

But McAndrew is now on the Crows’ AFL list after Strachan suffered another injury.

Strachan, who has been a long-time understudy behind Adelaide’s first-choice ruckman Reilly O’Brien, has been moved to the inactive list.

Strachan had surgery on stress fracture in his right foot last December.

After resuming running in the first week of February, the 29-year-old last week reported heel soreness and was sent for scans which showed another stress fracture, unrelated to his earlier foot problem.

Strachan has been moved to the inactive list, making him ineligible for the 2025 season.

Adelaide, left with O’Brien as their only listed ruckman, then moved to sign McAndrew.

“Given the timing of Kieran’s latest injury and the importance of the ruck position, it was crucial we moved quickly to find a replacement,” Crows list manager Justin Reid said in a statement on Monday.

“Lachie has been very impressive with us over summer and has earned the spot on the list and I’m sure he will make the most of his opportunity.”
