Three arrested after street racing on I-75 Saturday

Three men were arrested Saturday after a group of vehicles initiated a “street takeover” on Interstate 75 in Collier County and took part in street racing on the freeway, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The incident began about 4:05 p.m. as FHP state troopers responded to a report of stopped vehicles and traffic congestion, with a low flying helicopter taking video near mile marker 51, which is in the Big Cypress Preserve in Collier County.

A screen grab of a video supplied by the Florida Highway Patrol of a “street takeover” on Interstate 75 in Collier County on Saturday, where a green Porsche was doing donuts before a crowd of onlookers.

Five dark colored SUVs were parked side by side, blocking the northbound interstate travel lanes and shoulders, with several people standing outside their vehicles as a bright green Porsche GT3 911 “performed aggressive circular spins (aka donuts),” the FHP release stated.

“This action left a thick cloud of smoke, leaving a visible haze in the area,” troopers said.

A Porsche the Florida Highway Patrol said it impounded Saturday after a “street takeover” and racing on northbound Interstate 75 Saturday in Collier County.

While responding to the incident, troopers said they saw more than 25 high performance vehicles speeding north.

They stopped the Porsche in the parking lot of the 63-mile marker recreation area and arrested a 27-year-old Staten Island man who told them he was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the “street takeover.” He was charged with riding a passenger in race competition in violation of state law, the FHP said.

The Porsche driver, described as “the camera guy,” the FHP said, remains unknown.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it seized a blue Porsche after it was involved in street racing on Interstate 75 in Collier County Saturday.

Other troopers at 4:09 p.m. responded to a street takeover occurring at mile marker 63 on northbound I-75, the agency reported. There, troopers saw a blue Porsche making an ******** U-turn at mile marker 65, which is “a prohibited paved U-turn spot.”

The unregistered Porsche was impounded, and the driver, a 39-year-old man was issued a misdemeanor notice to appear in court.

Minutes later, at about 4:19 p.m. troopers reported seeing a two-door 2024 Blue Ferrari SF90 racing “multiple exotic vehicles” on northbound I-75. The Ferrari, with no displayed license tag, was clocked going 148 mph in a posted 70 mph zone, the FHP said.

The driver, a 32-year-old New York man was arrested for racing on the highway, speeding and not having a tag. The Ferrari was impounded.
