Delaware high school student, 15, charged with bringing gun to school in backpack

Delaware police arrested a 15-year-old high school student accused of bringing a gun to school in his backpack.

School staff at Rutherford B. Hayes High School and a resource officer were told about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday that a student might have a gun in his backpack, Delaware Police Chief Adam Moore said.

The resource officer confronted the student with school administrators, and they found a gun in his backpack, Moore said.

The student was taken into custody and taken to the Central Ohio Youth Center, where he is being held as of Thursday morning on a charge of illegally bringing a weapon into a school safety zone.

Moore said a lockdown was not necessary because the incident was addressed quickly. Police and school staff are working to determine why the student brought the gun to school.

“At this time, I do not have information that would lead me to believe there is an ongoing threat to our students or staff,” Moore said in an email.

A spokeswoman for Delaware City Schools confirmed officials found the gun, and police took the student into custody. Principal Rex Reeder alerted parents to the incident in an email Wednesday.

“The safety of our students is our number one priority, but it takes all of us to ensure a safe school environment,” Reeder said in an email to parents. “We want to reiterate the importance of ‘See something, say something.”

Moore and Reeder said any safety concerns in schools should be reported to school administration, police or the Safer Ohio Schools tip line at 844-723-3764.
