Iwai stays hot to maintain lead at Thai LPGA event

Sponsor invite Akie Iwai has shot a five-under 67 to enjoy a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the LPGA’s Thailand tournament at Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Old Course.

After an opening-round 62, the Japanese has a two-round total of 13-under 129 after Friday’s play.

The 22-year-old earned her LPGA tour membership after finishing in a tie for fifth at the LPGA Final Qualifier last year.

American Angel Yin (64) is in second place. Jeeno Thitikul, the world No.2 who turned 22 on Thursday, was tied for third, also after a 64, along with fellow Thai Moriya Jutanugarn (66).

“Today, I shot well and putted well. My distance control was good. That’s why I made a lot of birdies,” said Iwai.

Defending champion Patty Tavatanakit (68) is in a 13-player group sitting at five under.

Gabriela Ruffels is the best-placed *********** in a tie for 31st, three under after her round of one-over 73.

Steph Kyriacou (74) is a further two strokes adrift while Grace Ki (75) is at five over, along with 2023 winner Lilia Vu (73) of the United States.

The event is the first stop of the LPGA’s so-called Asian swing before the tour moves to Singapore and China over the next two weeks.
