The Fall Guy Review – Hilarious Action-Packed Love Letter to the Stunt Community

Being a stunt double is a paradox – their ******-defying stunts are seen by millions, yet their work is often unrecognised and invisible to many; this concept is beautifully explored in The Fall Guy. This film is a reinterpretation of the TV series from 1981, directed by David Leitch, a former stunt performer himself, known for his work on John Wick and Deadpool 2. The Fall Guy pays tribute to the film industry and the overlooked heroes that bring it to life.

The action scenes with stunts are top-notch! Cars flipping, soaring through the air, and smashing through glass – they look so authentic and really in my opinion, outshine some of the CGI action scenes we have seen in other blockbuster movies, it’s nice to have authenticity in film, and Fall Guy showcases the stunts to the audience as if we were on set.

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is the stunt double of mega-celebrity actor Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson); he’s the the best in the business. He’s also in a casual relationship with camerawoman Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), ******* by their shared love of making movies and stunts.

In essence, Colt finds himself grappling with a shattered spine, a devastated love life, and a fragmented sense of identity after an unexpected calamity. He aimlessly maintains his role as a valet at a ******** eatery until he’s woken from his despondency by a call from the feisty producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham), who has a tempting offer up her sleeve. Jody is at the helm of her first directorial venture — a humorous, futuristic, sci-fi romance entitled Metalstorm, in which Tom plays the protagonist and Colt is eyed as the stunt double.

The storyline gets more intriguing when Tom vanishes, prompting Colt to embark on a frantic search to locate him for Jody’s film. If he’s successful, he might get another shot at winning over Jody. While the narrative may seem unnecessarily intricate, it indeed is. But The Fall Guy still provides an enjoyable journey through the murky underworld of drugs, ******* and ***********.

The Fall Guy is out in Cinemas on 26 April.
