Two dead after a knife attack in Czech shopping centre

Two women have been killed following a knife attack at a shopping centre in the Czech city of Hradec Kralove.

Police say they detained a suspect who stabbed the two women in a store in the city, some 100km east of Prague.

A 16-year-old Czech citizen was detained by police about 1km from the scene, shortly after Thursday’s attack. A knife was found nearby.

Police said in a post on X: “Although we were on the scene within a few minutes of the report, both victims suffered injuries so serious that they could not be saved despite all efforts of responders.”

According to Czech News Agency (CTK), Thursday’s attack occurred in a shopping area on Akademik Bedrna Street.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala offered his condolences to the relatives of the dead.

“What has happened in Hradec Kralove today is an absolutely incomprehensible and horrible act,” he posted on X.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known.

Police say the situation was under control and there was no danger to the public.
