Maestra Mezcalera Isabel Santiago

Crafted in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca—the heart of the indigenous Zapotec region—ZOMOZ is produced by fourth-generation Maestra Mezcalera Isabel Santiago at her family’s organic agave plantation and palenque. Santiago is one of few female mezcaleras in Mexico. Her production is as authentic as it comes, with every step of the 100% sustainable process supervised and performed by her team of seasoned, Oaxacan artisans.

Diego de la Vega Fernández is co-founder of ZOMOZ Mezcal. The Mexico City-born Fernandez’s upbringing, academic background, and early career paths took him to all corners of the globe. Yet, no matter how far he strayed, the passion he held for his culture and homeland never wavered. Alongside his partners, he established ZOMOZ to introduce a premium, authentic mezcal to the U.S. market, aiming to celebrate ******** culture and craftsmanship. The brand emphasizes mezcal as a luxury product that honors its traditional roots by embodying the soul of Oaxaca’s agave-growing culture.

While mezcal’s rise to global prominence is relatively recent, its roots trace back centuries, and its growing popularity speaks to a cultural shift in how we appreciate spirits. Every drop of ZOMOZ tells the story of tradition, craftsmanship, and the artistry behind its production. 

Crystal-clear in appearance with a subtly smoked agave aroma, complemented by notes of honey, butterscotch, gentle floral notes, roasted green chili, and white pepper, ZOMOZ is made from 100% organic Espadin agave and pure spring water. The agave is cooked underground in a conical stone oven fueled by ethically sourced sustainable wood, then crushed using a traditional stone wheel (tahona). Fermentation occurs in open pine vats (tinas), and the mezcal is distilled twice in copper pot stills before undergoing a proprietary double filtration system. This dedication to a traditional artisanal process is evident in every sip. Crystal clear and ripe with bright agave, robust smoke, and a plethora of layered, nuanced flavor notes of fresh agave, stone fruit, leather, and a hint of vanilla, ZOMOZ mezcal is both elegant and rustic. It was awarded Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits Competition 2024, for good reason.
