Looking Back At The $386,000 Dying Light ‘My Apocalypse Edition’, 10 Years Later

In 2015, Dying Light emerged to an overwhelmingly popular reception, wowing the world and offering up a stellar zombie-slaying experience fused with intense parkour mechanics. Fast forward ten years and Dying Light remains one of the most popular open-world zombie games ever made – and in 2022, Techland bolstered the series with Dying Light 2: Stay Human.

Ahead of the launch of Dying Light in 2015, Techland promoted one of the most expensive collector’s editions ever seen – the ‘My Apocalypse Edition’. This monumental, one-of-a-kind version of Dying Light came with a $386,000 price tag, and now that the game’s tenth anniversary has come around, I reached out to Techland to see what came of it.

Never Seen Again

I’ve seen some pretty extravagant collector’s editions in my time. They typically boast statues, art books, prints, and themed items pulled straight from whatever game you’re purchasing.

The ‘My Apocalypse Edition’ for 2015’s Dying Light went about ten steps further than that.

For one lucky person willing to spend $386,000, the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light promised a staggering collection. It included the buyer’s face in the game, a human-sized ‘Volatile’ statue, and parkour lessons with a freerunning team. It also came with night vision goggles, an all-expenses paid round trip to Techland’s offices, and four signed copies of the game.

Oh, and it also came with a custom-built, ‘zombie-proof’ survival shelter.

What happened to the ‘My Apocalypse Edition’ of Dying Light?

The game’s release came and went, and eventually, everyone forgot about the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light – except for me.

I recently reached out to Techland to see what came of that lavish collector’s edition. In a matter of minutes, I had a response from Paulina Dziedziak, PR Manager at Techland:

‘It was a PR stunt and got a lot of media attention for its wild and over-the-top nature, it was designed to generate buzz around the game’s release. It did a great job of getting the game noticed, though! But nobody purchased it – thankfully, I guess!’

If it wasn’t for the inclusion of the zombie survival shelter, the My Apocalypse Edition would have been believable. I mean, if a couple of zeroes were shaved off the $386,000 prize tag, that would also have been more realistic.
