Emergency supplies arrive in Kimberley towns after Cyclone Zelia causes disruptions

Supermarket giant Woolworths has mobilised emergency supply efforts to restock shelves in communities cut off by flooding in the wake of Cyclone Zelia, with fresh produce and essential items enroute to Broome and Derby.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services secured a C-130 Hercules aircraft from the *********** Defence Force to airlift critical supplies.

The ADF-crewed aircraft departed RAAF Base Pearce at 11am on Wednesday, arriving at Broome International Airport at 2.35pm with 10 tonnes of goods, including potable water and non-perishable food.

The supplies have been distributed between major Broome supermarkets Woolworths and Coles.

Woolworths has been working closely with the WA Government to open alternative supply routes and facilitate emergency deliveries to affected areas.

“We thank our store and supply chain teams for their tireless efforts over the last week, and our customers for their patience and understanding,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.

“We continue to ask customers to only buy what they need as we work hard to replenish our stock levels.”

The resupply missions were initiated by DFES through the State Resupply Reference Group, which coordinates stockpiles of essential goods to replenish fresh food inventories for local and regional suppliers.

While product limits remain in place at Woolworths Broome, no restrictions have been imposed on customers in Derby.

Meanwhile, deliveries into Port Hedland, Karratha, Newman, and Wickham have resumed, with road conditions improving and stock levels expected to return to normal in the coming days.

A major supply convoy carrying 37 trailers loaded with fresh and chilled produce, gas, and other essential goods departed Port Hedland at 10am on Wednesday.

The convoy of 13 trucks, escorted by a Main Roads vehicle, was granted passage along the Great Northern Highway after floodwaters receded overnight.

Main Roads WA issued permits for the trucks to proceed, with drivers navigating challenging stretches of highway at reduced speeds.

Authorities continue to assess road conditions to determine when public access will be restored.

The convoy is expected to reach Broome this evening, while additional supplies are being transported from Darwin, with extra trailers delivering frozen and chilled products, long-life milk, bottled water, toilet paper, and noodles.
