Early blooms in Japan’s cherry blossom season

In Japan, locals say the cherry blossom season starts early in Shizuoka, 45 minutes from Tokyo on a bullet train.

“While many flock to Tokyo or Kyoto for the traditional peak season, from as early as January to late April, the cherry blossoms in Shizuoka prefecture create a magical display,” says a spokesperson for Explore Shizuoka, the region’s tourism promoter.

“The prefecture fills with stunning, vibrant blooms that enhance the region’s landscape.”

And these are the locals’ top three recommendations for the season:

Atami Cherry Blossom Festival

Atami-zakura is among the earliest region to bloom, with blossoms opening between late January and early February. The blooms remain for around four weeks. Atami-zakura has cherry trees lining the Itokawa River and the ocean-front parks.

Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival

This showcases cherry blossoms on the Izu Peninsula. They are famous for their long-lasting, vibrant pink blossoms which come out as early as February. The festival is from early to late February.

Minami Izu Cherry Blossom and Rapeseed Flower Festival

At the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, the town of Minami Izu hosts a Sakura blossom and “Nanohana” rapeseed flower festival from early February to March. The festival features around 800 Kawazu cherry blossom trees and a sea of yellow rapeseed flowers (canola) that stretches along the Aono River.
