Overland Park man pleads guilty to taking ‘upskirting’ photos of girls at Oak Park Mall

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Overland Park man pleaded guilty on Friday to three misdemeanor charges after he was found taking photos of a group of girls at an “upskirting” angle at Oak Park Mall last year.

According to court records in Johnson County, Austin Flynn pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of breach of privacy. He was originally charged with two felony counts, but they were later amended to misdemeanor charges, and the third misdemeanor was later added.

Court documents said that on June 9, 2024, officers with the Overland Park Police Department were called to a Sephora after a man, later identified as Flynn, was caught taking inappropriate photos of a group of females by an Overland Park detective.

The detective reportedly saw Flynn duck down or crouch behind a display next to the group and put his phone under their dresses and skirts. According to the detective’s statement, it was “apparent” that he had been taking photos of the females.

Following the incident, officers were able to contact and arrest Flynn after discovering that the ages of the girls ranged from 11 to 19.

While being interviewed, Flynn gave consent to officers to search his phone and admitted to taking photos at multiple locations, including the previously named Sephora, a Forever 21, and escalators.

According to court records, Flynn told police he was unaware of the ages of the females.

A day after his arrest, Flynn posted bond and was let out of jail. Now, following the latest charges, Flynn is ordered to serve 14 days of shock time — also known as a short jail sentence –, 25 hours of community service, continued mental health treatments, and no contact with the victims or witnesses.
