Adam Simpson predicts encouraging start to the season for West Coast Eagles with early home wins

Adam Simpson believes West Coast will give their home fans plenty to cheer about early in the season, predicting the Eagles will win their first two games against travelling opponents at Optus Stadium.

The blue-and-gold army have watched just seven wins in 36 matches at their home venue across the past three seasons, leading to Simpson’s exit in the back half of last year.

But the ex-coach said he was backing the Eagles to notch a win in their season opener for the first time since 2021 when Gold Coast make the trip west on March 16, and back it up with a round six victory over Essendon.

“Their list is more evolved than (Richmond and North Melbourne), but they’re working through a new coach,” Simpson said on SEN while plotting out early-season predictions.

“I’ve got them 16th… I’ve got them 2-4 (after six rounds).

“I think they beat the Bombers and they win round one.”

West Coast have a western derby date with Fremantle in round three in between road clashes against Brisbane, GWS and Carlton (in Adelaide for Gather Round) in the opening six weeks.

Simpson boldly predicted a bright start for North Melbourne with a 3-3 record through six rounds – a number that would match their win total for the entirety of each of their past two seasons.

It comes as the former coach recalled a humorous memory from his first pre-season match at the helm amid Eagles successor Andrew McQualter’s opening pre-season win on Monday.

“My first game, years ago, was against Freo in a pre-season game. I was that amped up… it was like it was grand final day,” Simpson said.

“Then I saw (then Fremantle coach) Ross Lyon in the dugout with thongs on, and – it wasn’t a tank top, but he was pretty relaxed.

“And I was in chinos with the polo tucked in.

“So we might have gone a bit ‘overs’ on the preparation for that.”
