Minneapolis bookstore surveys ‘catastrophic’ damage caused by burst water main

A Minneapolis bookstore says it has lost a majority of its inventory due to flooding in the basement caused by a burst water main last week.

Paperback Exchange said the burst main under West 50th Street on Thursday resulted in “catastrophic damage” to the basement wall, with water also flooding the basement of Terzo restaurant next door, before gushing out into the street.

“The resulting flood completely destroyed our entire basement and rose about a foot onto our first floor. We are heartbroken. About 70% of our inventory was lost,” the business said in an update on Monday, sharing photos of the damage in a social media post.

The business said while it lost most of inventory that was in the basement, it thanked the efforts of the community, saying they helped to save most of its books upstairs.

Paperback Exchange says it will post updates on how people can help going forward. The bookstore remains closed for the time being.

Paperback Exchange was first established in 1975 and is considered one of the state’s longest running independent bookstores.
