Norths regroup under pressure to easily beat Lake View

North Kalgoorlie’s lower order displayed a steely resolve and Matt Smart and Michael Noble each snared three wickets to lead the way in the side’s decisive A-grade win on Saturday against Lake View in the Eastern Goldfields Cricket Association.

After winning the toss and batting at Wallace Park, Norths initially struggled to 6-59 before the bottom-five each made solid contributions that steered the defending premiers to 181.

Among the top six, opener Nick Willis’ 21 off 15 deliveries led the way, but the innings was put back on track by Sam Burge (24; four fours), Cooper Bennett (18 off 35 ******) and Blake Willis (36 off 21 ******; two fours; three sixes).

Batting at No.10, Kyle Hislop contributed 17 off 33 deliveries and No.11 Smart was not out 19 with three boundaries.

Riley Logan and Matt Carter grabbed three wickets each and Stuart Kennedy chimed in with 2-23, but the Viewers were dismissed for 94 in 33.5 overs.

It was generally slim pickings for Lake View after opener David Forest’s dismissal for 24.

Ash Malec faced 30 ****** for his 11 and No.7 batter Luke Gilfillan top-scored with 33 of 49 ******.

His innings included five boundaries but the Viewers’ innings ended when the last three wickets tumbled without addition to the score as Smart and Noble each grabbed 3-25.

They were supported by Blake Willis (2-11) and Nick Willis (2-21).

After back-to-back losses in rounds seven and eight, Norths have hit back strongly by winning three of their past four matches.

Lake View’s past seven matches have yielded just one win.

Norths are hoping for a similar finish to last season, when six consecutive wins and a subsequent grand final triumph against Great Boulder followed a four-win campaign in 2022-23 when they missed the finals.
