Most of Mississippi is under an enhanced risk of severe weather, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. The NWS announced that tornado warnings were issued for “Northwestern Yazoo County in Central Mississippi, Southern Humphreys County in Central Mississippi and East central Sharkey County in West central Mississippi.” The warning was in effect until 8:45 p.m. “Severe thunderstorms, capable of producing tornadoes and damaging wind gusts to 70 mph are likely across the entire area late this afternoon into tonight,” according to the NWS. “Strong tornadoes are possible.” After temperatures approached 80 degrees in much of Mississippi, a cold front was expected to plunge temperatures to 45 degrees overnight. Jackson and much of Mississippi are under a severe weather threat on Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service. At 7:43 p.m., a “severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Holly Bluff, or 8 miles southeast of Rolling Fork, moving northeast at 55 mph.” As much as three quarters of an inch of rain was expected in Jackson and up to an inch was expected in Hattiesburg, where wind gusts were expected up to 40 mph. Jackson was under a risk of severe weather from 8 p.m. to midnight. The Mississippi Delta was all placed under an enhanced risk, with Greenville under the threat of severe weather from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Greenwood and Yazoo City under the threat of severe weather from 8 p.m. to midnight. Meridian, Laurel and Hattiesburg were under the risk of severe weather from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Mississippi River was under a flood advisory at “Vicksburg affecting Madison, Warren, Claiborne, Jefferson and Tensas Counties” What is the Sunday forecast in Jackson? Sunday is projected at a high of 46 degrees and a low of 28. Wind gusts are projected up to 30 mph. Temperatures were forecasted to be as low as 21 by Thursday. What is the Sunday forecast in Hattiesburg? A cloudy morning should clear up during the day with a high of 59 degrees. Sunday night, temperatures were expected to drop to 31. Thursday night, a hard freeze is expected, with forecasted temperatures plunging to 23. How many tornadoes have touched down in Mississippi this year? To date, 11 tornadoes have been recorded in Mississippi in 2025, with eight in January and three in February. The Noxubee County tornado on Jan. 5 reached 500 yards wide and 115 mph. None of the previous 11 2025 tornadoes produced any deaths.
