LIV Golf leaders brace for stiff final-round challenge

Sam Horsfield, a meat pie lover from England, reckons it will take all-out aggression to triumph at LIV Golf’s Adelaide tournament.

******** Carlos Ortiz believes it takes respect; his countryman Abraham Ancer reckons it will come down to diligence.

The trio are joint leaders at nine under and carry a three-shot buffer from the field into Sunday’s final round at The Grange.

All are bracing for strong challenges if the stiff winds continue at the course in the seaside Adelaide suburb.

Horsfield led after the first round before being joined by the Mexicans on Saturday.

“The mentality on this tour, the guys are very aggressive,” said the 28-year-old from Manchester.

“And when you get some of the best players in the world being aggressive, it’s going to pay off for them.

“This golf course, because you can’t overpower it with the wind and how firm it is … (but) I think a lot of guys take that approach, there’s just a lot more aggression.”

Horsfield said he would prepare for the final round just as he did for the second.

“I’m going to go have a meat pie – they’re amazing in the clubhouse, I had two last night,” he said post-Saturday’s round.

Ortiz predicted a more conservative approach in the chase for the $US4 million winner’s cheque.

“It (the course) is definitely playing hard,” he said.

“I’m just trying not to hit it in bad spots … you really have to be respectful of the golf course, almost play a little bit defensive.

“And I think I’ve done a good job of that … I have honestly played quite conservative off the tee and into the greens and I think that has paid off.”

His countryman Ancer hoped the winds would blow again as forecast on Sunday.

“What you’ve got to do on this golf course, you have to be very smart,” he said.

“You have to be very diligent where you place your ball.”

The top trio are three shots clear of Chile’s Joaquin Niemann (six under) while Spain’s former world No.1 Jon Rahm lurking at five under.

Lucas Herbert, at three under, is the best-placed *********** with compatriots Marc Leishman (one under), Cam Smith (one over) and Matt Jones (two over) off the pace.

The quartet comprise the all *********** team Ripper GC who carrry slim hopes of successfully defending their team title from Adelaide last year – they’re nine shots behind leaders Majesticks GC captained by England’s Ian Poulter.
