What to know as San Diego airport nears end of first phase in Terminal 1 revamp

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The first phase of construction to San Diego International Airport’s brand-new Terminal 1 is nearing its end.

However, before it opens later this year, people should plan for another round of construction-related traffic interruptions when driving in and out of the airport.

Starting on Feb. 20, a stretch of Airport Terminal Road on approach to Terminal 1 — both the forthcoming terminal and the existing one — and its adjacent Parking Plaza will have several lane closures in place due to the ongoing construction.

Drivers will need to merge into the left-most lanes while passing the new Terminal 1 while the closures are in place.

Travelers are encouraged to plan for traffic congestion when heading to the airport with the construction, especially for flights during peak hours — 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight.

Although this advance thinking is likely nothing new for San Diegans, who have become accustomed to disruptions from Terminal 1-related work during the more than three years since groundbreaking.

will replace the aged Terminal 1, which is currently used by Southwest and budget airlines, with a new building holding up to 30 new gates and modernized amenities for travelers — from shops and restaurants to gate-area seating and art.

Thousands of new parking spaces will also be added at the airport as part of the Terminal 1 project, including the more than 2,800 that opened ahead of the busy Labor Day weekend.

The first phase of construction to the new terminal is expected to be complete by summer 2025 and will include 19 of the 30 new gates. An exact date for the opening has not yet been announced.

After it opens, construction will then turn to the demolition of the existing Terminal 1 to make way for the second wing of the new building. This next stage of work is expected to take until at least mid-2028.

The project’s cost is being funded through federal grants, such as those from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and airline operating and lease agreements.
