But sometimes, even the best intentions can lead to unintended chaos. It’s hard to consider that NetEase Games had our best intentions in mind when they designed the recent Valentine’s Day streamer event of Marvel Rivals. This led to a lot of issues as players threw games, abandoned them entirely, and ruined the experience for every other player in the lobby. Marvel Rivals‘ Valentine’s Day Event was a massive red flag This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up And we don’t want to see another one like it again. | Image Credit: NetEase Games On paper, the Fantastic Love Streamer Giveaway Event seemed harmless. Between February 12 and 14, NetEase partnered with several streamers across different servers, giving players the chance to win the Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman 60th Wedding Anniversary Bundle just by being in the same match as them. Rather than focusing on objectives, players deliberately lost games, left lobbies, or sabotaged their own teams just to try and get into the same games as these streamers. The backlash was immediate and severe. Many players are annoyed about how this event prioritized engagement over game quality. Some argued that the event should have been structured differently, locking the skins behind challenges or This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up drops instead. For all the good decisions that NetEase has made so far in the game’s life, this was a bad one. We sincerely hope the devs learn from this. So for a lot of players, history is repeating itself. There was a similar event when the game was first released and we had the same kind of complaints back then too. This Redditor summed it up perfectly by saying, “This is a major blunder and I really can’t wrap my head around why they’ve done this ***** not once, but TWICE now.“ Achievement farming was the only good thing that came of it This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up Let’s hope NetEase learned from this mistake. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Even in the chaos though, one This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up user actually took the opportunity to get some profit. u/Yevon talked about how they used the time to enjoy the creative ways in which people would throw games while they themselves used the time to farm achievements. u/Sandi_Griffin also shared that they completed so many achievements that they almost have enough units to buy the skins from the store itself. Marvel Rivals has built its reputation on listening to its community and making quick changes based on feedback. The developers have already reversed controversial decisions in the past, such as the mid-season ranked reset. NetEase has proved that they are willing to course-correct when needed. This is one of those times. Especially given the fact that it’s the second time this has happened. The game has been a landslide success. It made an estimated $136 million in its first month and there have been no controversies or problems yet. We sure hope it stays that way and that NetEase doesn’t try to prioritize revenue over player satisfaction in the future.
